HALL MCCANN, LCSW

Personal challenges are a normal part of the human experience. You are in good company if you’ve ever felt at a crossroads in life, ambivalent or stuck, and like old ways of navigating personal problems don’t seem to be working.  While these experiences can be incredibly uncomfortable, they can also provide opportunities for personal growth and positive change. I support people in creating and maintaining healthy relationships, both with others and with themselves. Through this work, people are able to experience relief from feelings of anxiety and stress, overwhelming emotions, and uncertainty. Over time, this allows them to better connect with their inner knowledge about who they are and what they really want.

ABOUT ME

I received my Master of Social Work degree from Hunter College in New York City, where I specialized in clinical treatment with adolescents, adults, children, and parent-child dyads. I have provided psychotherapy and mental health care in a variety of settings, including both private practice and community based programs. I am relationally and psychodynamically oriented, and my work is heavily informed by attachment theory. I carefully consider environmental factors including marginality and systemic oppression, as well as the impact of culture and community on a person’s wellbeing. I believe in transformation through identifying and addressing patterns and their origins, as well as the healing power of a therapeutic relationship.

My training, as well as personal and professional experience, has led me to develop a therapeutic approach that is genuine, non-judgmental, flexible, and personalized. My style is supportive and direct, and infused with humor and personality. I don’t give advice, I support you in uncovering and clarifying your own strengths, intuition, and inner knowledge about who you are and what you really want.

SPECIALIZATIONS

Home: FAQ

I work with adolescents and adults around life transitions and identity issues, which manifest in various ways. I work with adults around changes in relationships, careers, lifestyles, and other aspects of the human experience. I also work with parents and children, together or separately, around shifting family dynamics that often occur when teens start middle school, high school, or college, and experience the challenges of individuation. I support teens in managing academic anxiety, and navigating identity development as well as healthy, positive peer and early romantic relationships.

I specialize in working with teens and adults navigating divorce, both in moments of family crisis, and as families adjust to their new structure and shifting roles related to the introduction of parents’ new partners and step-siblings.  I enjoy working with teens and adults navigating foster care and adoption situations (both formal and informal), and adults who have been through foster care themselves.

I also support people navigating issues related to gender and sexuality, and specialize in working with LGBTQ+ teens, adults, and families. This includes work with trans and nonbinary children, teens, adults, and/or their family members.

Wild Geese

Mary Oliver

You do not have to be good.

You do not have to walk on your knees

for a hundred miles through the desert repenting.

You only have to let the soft animal of your body

love what it loves.

Tell me about despair, yours, and I will tell you mine.

Meanwhile the world goes on.

Meanwhile the sun and the clear pebbles of the rain

are moving across the landscapes,

over the prairies and the deep trees,

the mountains and the rivers.

Meanwhile the wild geese, high in the clean blue air,

are heading home again.

Whoever you are, no matter how lonely,

the world offers itself to your imagination,

calls to you like the wild geese, harsh and exciting -

over and over announcing your place

in the family of things.
